Artpace San Antonio Announces 2021 International Artist-in-Residence Program

Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce the Spring 2021 International Artists-in-Residence, selected by guest curator Gilbert Vicario. Vicario is Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and the Selig Family Chief Curator at the Phoenix Art Museum. Resident artists Adrian Aguilera (Austin, Texas), Nazafarin Lotfi (Tucson, Arizona/Tehran, Iran), and Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere (Brooklyn, New York) will begin their

residency on January 25, 2021 and will live and work at Artpace until March 22, 2021. An online Welcome Dinner will be held on Thursday, January 28, and the artists will discuss their past work and plans for their Artpace residency.

Main Space Exhibition Features New Work by José Villalobos

Artpace is pleased to announce de los otros, the first exhibition of 2021 in the Main Space gallery, featuring José Villalobos’s work. While Artpace is closed for appointments, the exhibition will be visible from North Main Ave. beginning Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Jose Villalobos’s artwork utilizes objects connected to his Norteño culture to challenge toxic masculinity and the marginalization of queer bodies. de los otros continues his practice of exploiting items related to his cultural heritage to draw attention to its issues.

Artpace Exhibition Features the works of the
Late Carolee Schneemann and Texas Women Artists

Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce our first exhibition of 2021: After Carolee: Tender and Fierce, guest-curated by Annette DiMeo Carlozzi. On view in the Hudson Showroom, After Carolee: Tender and Fierce was conceived for Artpace’s 25th anniversary year to give tribute to one of its most iconic former residents, Carolee Schneemann, and to welcome to Artpace for the first time more than a dozen women artists with Texas ties. In striking and dynamic ways, these artists’ works can be seen in dialog with Schneemann’s intellectual, performative, and erotic artistic legacies.

Artpace at 25: New Book Captures Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residency Program from 2008–2019

Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce the release of the landmark publication, Artpace at 25. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Artpace San Antonio has published a 272-page volume of never-before-published curatorial essays and full-color images of every exhibition created through its International Artist-in-Residence program from 2008 to 2019. Artpace at 25 will be available for purchase beginning today, December 15, 2020.

Artpace San Antonio Keeps the Residency Program Going Strong with New Exhibitions

Fall 2020 Resident Artists Create New Bodies of Work Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

Artpace San Antonio opens three new exhibitions featuring its Fall 2020 International Artists-in-Residence, Letitia Huckaby (Fort Worth, TX), Elana Mann (Los Angeles, CA), and Alisa Yang (New York, USA/Los Angeles, USA/Helsinki, Finland). Selected by curator Dr. Lauren Cross, the resident artists have spent the last several weeks living and creating new work in San Antonio. The exhibitions open virtually on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at 4pm CST. Register for the virtual opening here. Each exhibition responds to the uncertain socio-political climate in which the world has found itself amid the COVID-19 pandemic and in the United States amid continued calls for equality for black and indigenous lives and people of color.
