As we practice social distancing and look for engaging ways to share art with you, Artpace has launched a virtual studio visit series as part of our Artpace at Home initiative. During the studio visit, you’ll get a glimpse into the artists’ studios, their works in progress, and learn more about their studio practices. #MakeArtHappen #ArtpaceAtHome

Our next studio visit will be with Fall 2009 International Artist-in-Resident Mario Ybarra Jr. Based in Los Angeles, Ybarra creates sculptures, installations, photographs, and activist interventions as a means of examining various components of Mexican-American identity.

The studio visit will be held through the Artpace Instagram live. To read about Mario Ybarra Jr.’s exhibition, Silver and Blackplease visit our Residencies and Exhibitions page.

About the Artist

Mario Ybarra Jr. (b.1973) is a Mexican-American, conceptual artist born and raised in Los Angeles. He received an MFA from the University of California, Irvine and a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design. He has been featured in many local, national, and international exhibitions/fairs including at the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Tate Museum in London, Orange County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, MOCA Los Angeles, MOCA Detroit, ICA Boston, Museo De Cervantez Spain, ARCO Fair 2011 and 2013, LACMA, and Art Institute of Chicago, among others. In 2002, in partnership with his wife Karla Diaz, he co-founded Slanguage (an artist-run space/collective in Los Angeles that hosted art exhibitions, residencies, and programming for youth and adults). He has been featured as a speaker in many national and international venues, including the Creative Summit in New York and Artpace San Antonio.
