Join us Thursday, March 22nd as we unveil new work by Artpace’s Spring 2018 Resident Artists Kapwani Kiwanga (Paris, France), Rafa Esparza (Los Angeles, CA) and Carlos Rosales-Silva (Austin, TX) Curated by Risa Puleo.

About the artists:

Born in Hamilton, Canada and based in Paris, current Artpace resident, Kapwani Kiwanga produces works across installation, performance, and video that marry her training in anthropology with her interests in history, memory, and mythology. Presenting rigorous research in imaginative ways, Kiwanga intentionally confuses truth and fiction in her work in order to enable fantastical narratives.

Rafa Esparza ‘s recent installations have centered largely on the making of adobe bricks, produced in collaboration with the artist’ s father and others in the area of northeast Los Angeles surrounding the Los Angeles River. The brick-making technique employed by Esparza is used throughout Mexico, and notably, it was the method his father used to build his first house in Mexico before he immigrated to the United States.

Oral histories from Mexican and Native peoples, post-colonial historical texts, and spaces that are safe and inclusive for people of color are the cosmologies that surround Mexican-American artist Carlos Rosales-Silva’s work. His most recent output reclaims the colors and forms that have long been (ab)used to create oppressive stereotypes of Mexican and Native American peoples.

Opening Reception for the Spring 2018 IAIR artists is Thursday, March 22nd 5-9pm. The exhibition will be on view through May 13, 2018.
